It was a pure pleasure to be back on these incredible roads in September after more than a decade away. The conditions couldn't have been better and the scenery, well ...
Hard to believe you can experience this much terrain within a few miles of town. Up to the Lakes Basin via Old Mammoth Road, then along the fabulous new trail system to Horseshoe Lake, followed by the obligatory Lake Mary loop (those colors!) and finally the sweet descent back into town.
Up and down - and up and down again - along the north side of Mammoth Mountain and down into Red's Meadow. Warm up is the grind up past Main Lodge and over Minaret Summit. Hold on tight for the bumpy descent into the valley, then take a deep breath for the steep climb back out. All finished off with a whoosh down Highway 203 and back through town followed by some cool down on the trails near Eagle Lodge.
It's definitely not all downhill from Mammoth to Tom's Place, especially with a detour up to Convict Lake.
It doesn't get any better than this: two stunning scenic loops with an inspiring section of US 395 in between, crazy views in every direction, and stellar beers at June Lake Brewing. Best enjoyed with a short boat excursion at the halfway point!
